Las Vegas hosted the autumn conference for Americas Self Storage Association between the 4th and 6th of September. The event drew visitors country wide, and indeed worldwide, and was a feast of information, talks, seminars and discussions. With the US economy at the forefront of operators and suppliers minds, speakers from across the industry addressed ways in which the negative effects could be combated and avoided.

July 2008 - Steel Storage Europe bid farewell to Allen Lynch

Steel Storage would like to extend their gratitude and best wishes to Allen Lynch in his retirement following almost 12 years with the company, based in the UK office. With a career spanning over 50 years, he definitely deserves a well earned-break! Allen came to Steel Storage following 31 years as a Director for a heating and ventilation company in Croydon where he ran the steelworks side of the business. Allens role in Steel Storage has been crucial to the development of the European operation. Managing Director of Steel Storage Group, Jonathan Perrins, recruited Allen as the first employee in Europe and together, along with Jonathans wife Katie, they set up what is now the leading European self storage design and construction company with over 40 employees. Jonathan, who has since returned to Australia, had the following words to say:

May 2008 - Steel Storage Asia host annual management conference in Singapore

Singapore hosted this years annual senior management conference for the Steel Storage Group at the beginning of June. Thirty members from the worldwide Group, including Managing Director Jonathon Perrins, Director Robert Gregg from Carnegie Wylie & Co. and Director Drew Douglas from Douglas Wenck, assembled to review and discuss the year gone by as well as plan ahead for the future. The Group welcomed many new faces to the summit, a sign of the global growth the company is experiencing.

March 2008 - Steel Storage support the BAR conference and trade show in Edinburgh

The British Association of Removers annual conference in Edinburgh in May offered another opportunity for Steel Storage to lend its support to the ever growing self storage contingent arising from this industry. On hand at the event and lending his questionable talents to golf was the Steel Storage Head of Sales Adrian Starling with his UK sales team Matt Accorsi, Richard Ricketts and Justin Beavis. The BAR conference and exhibition was an excellent chance for us to spend some quality time with the members of this industry and learn about the possibilities that it has to offer in terms of diversification.

February 2008 - Steel Storage sponsors the first FEDESSA conference and trade show

Steel Storage were proud to be the main sponsor of the first FEDESSA conference and trade show held in Rome at the beginning of May. It was an opportunity for the company to showcase its new unique door design capabilities, enabling operators to customise their facilities with individually branded doors. These bespoke doors are produced within the companys manufacturing plant in Twickenham, London. With competition in the self storage industry at a premium, operators can now re-enforce their branding throughout the facility in way that has never been seen in the market to date. The new design capability is representative of the companys constant commitment to product innovation having invested a substantial amount on new door manufacturing machinery with the benefit of their customers in mind.

Steel Storage would like to welcome the new Managing Director of their European office in London, Colin Jeromson, who came on board at the end of March this year. Colin comes to Steel Storage with over 20 years experience in the construction industry having spent the last ten years working for the Swiss elevator company Schindler.

British self-storage firm Big Yellow said on Monday it had struck a 150 million pounds partnership with funds managed by Pramerica Real Estate to develop up to 25 stores in Britain. Big Yellow and Pramerica, the property investment and advisory arm of Prudential Financial Inc., are investing up to 25 million pounds and 50 million pounds respectively in the partnership to develop stores in the Midlands, the north of England and Scotland, it said in a statement.

Jones Lang LaSalle Corporate Finance announced today completion of the sale of the Space Maker Group, a US backed self storage business, to Babcock & Brown for approximately 63 million.

April 2007 - Construction Begins on Largest Self Storage Facility

Steel Storage Middle East LLC & Core Construction Company Co LLC have broken ground on what the owners believe to be is the worlds largest purpose built self storage facility in the world. Big Yellow FZ LLC; a franchise of Europes leading Self Storage operator Big Yellow Group PLC has chosen the International Media Production Zone in Dubai as the home of this mammoth structure which is geared towards operating as a hub for residential/commercial/industrial storage for both international and local users. The facility also boasts an entire building dedicated to under-bond self storage.

Six hectic and eventful years have passed since my arrival in England from Australia. Business takes me on regular "flying visits", where as soon as I am out of one office, I am in another airport lounge ready for take-off. This past summer, however, I piled my family into the car and headed off along the auto routes, autostrada and autobahns of Europe.
